Contract and contract-to-hire
Contract developers for the work that cannot wait 78 days
Full-time IT hiring in India now takes around 78 days on average. A contract developer from TechNimbus is a named engineer for a fixed term, with a clear start, a clear end and the option to convert.
A contract developer is a software engineer engaged for a fixed term or a defined scope of work, usually three to twelve months, rather than as a permanent employee. The engagement has an agreed start date, end date and notice terms.
Contract-to-hire is a variation where the client can move the developer onto its own payroll after an agreed period. TechNimbus offers both, for companies in India and overseas.
Why contract
Why Indian companies are hiring on contract
Contract hiring has grown from about 28% of IT engagements in India in 2023 to around 38% in 2026, according to CompanyBench research.
Delivery peaks
A launch, a migration or a client deadline that needs two more engineers for a quarter, not forever.
Specialist gaps
AI, cloud or a legacy stack you need for one project but cannot justify as a permanent role.
Headcount freezes
Budget for delivery, but no approval for permanent headcount. Contract spend sits in a different line.
Try before you hire
Contract-to-hire lets both sides confirm the fit on real work before a permanent offer.
Who we work with
For startups, enterprises and global capability centres
Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune account for 72% of IT contract deployments in India. Our developers are remote-first, so location is no longer the constraint.
Our contract developers work with three kinds of client:
- Indian startups and scale-ups that need senior engineers now and cannot afford a three-month hiring cycle for every role.
- Enterprises and global capability centres (GCCs) that run project-based delivery and need named contractors who can pass their onboarding and security checks.
- Overseas companies in the UK, Europe, the US and Australia that want Indian engineering on defined terms rather than an open-ended outsourcing contract.
Every contract states the developer, the term, the working hours and overlap, the notice period, and who owns the work. Intellectual property in the work produced transfers to you.
India's four Labour Codes became enforceable on 21 November 2025 and changed several obligations around fixed-term and contract workers, including gratuity eligibility after one year. If you engage contractors through any provider, ask how they handle those obligations. We cover this in our guide to contract versus full-time developers.
Contract types
Three ways to structure a contract
Fixed-term contract
- Named developer for a set term, typically 3 to 12 months
- Extend by agreement before the end date
- Best for project peaks and specialist work
Contract-to-hire
- Starts as a contract with a conversion option
- Convert after an agreed period on agreed terms
- Best when you want proof before a permanent offer
Rolling contract
- Month-to-month after an initial period
- Notice period agreed up front
- Best when the end date is genuinely unknown

CompanyBench also reports that opening roles to remote candidates in Tier-2 cities reduces rates by 15 to 20% for remote-compatible work. Figures are third-party estimates, not TechNimbus prices. Sources: Jellyfish Technologies, CompanyBench Research.
How it works
How a contract placement runs
STEP 01
Define the role and term
Stack, seniority, start date, term, hours and whether you want a conversion option.
STEP 02
Screened shortlist
Developers who have passed our technical interview and are available for your dates.
STEP 03
Your interview and offer
You interview and choose. We issue a contract that names the developer, term, notice and IP terms.
STEP 04
Delivery and check-ins
The developer works inside your team. We check in at week one, month one and every month after.
STEP 05
Extend, convert or close
Before the end date we agree whether to extend, convert to your payroll, or hand over and close cleanly.
How long are contract developer engagements?
Most contract engagements run between three and twelve months. Shorter terms are possible for specialist work such as an audit or a migration, and longer ones are common for enterprise projects. The term is written into the contract along with the notice period.
What is contract-to-hire?
Contract-to-hire starts as a normal contract, with an agreed option for you to move the developer onto your own payroll after a set period. It lets both sides confirm the fit on real work before a permanent offer is made. The conversion terms are agreed before the contract starts.
Can Indian companies hire contract developers from TechNimbus?
Yes. We work with Indian startups, enterprises and global capability centres as well as overseas companies. Developers can work fully remote, and we can discuss on-site visits for kick-offs or critical phases where the work requires it.
Is contract hiring cheaper than full-time hiring?
Per hour it is often more expensive, because the rate covers flexibility, employment costs and the provider's margin. In total cost it is often cheaper for defined work, because there is no recruitment fee, no long hiring cycle and no ongoing cost after the work ends. For permanent core roles, a full-time hire usually wins.
Which contract roles are most in demand in India?
CompanyBench's 2026 research names full-stack MERN and MEAN developers as the highest-volume stack in India's contract market, with AI, ML and GenAI skills the fastest-growing demand category. React, AWS cloud-native and Kubernetes skills are also growing quickly.
Who owns the work a contract developer produces?
You do. Intellectual property in the work produced for you transfers to you under the contract, and the code lives in your repositories throughout.
