IT staff augmentation
Add the exact skills your team is missing
Staff augmentation keeps your team, your process and your leadership exactly where they are, and adds the engineers you are short of. One specialist or a pod of five, working as part of your team.
IT staff augmentation is a way of adding external engineers to an existing in-house team to fill specific skill or capacity gaps. The client keeps technical leadership and directs the work; the provider supplies and employs the engineers.
It differs from outsourcing, where the provider takes responsibility for delivering an outcome. With augmentation, you stay in charge of how the work is done.
Typical gaps
What teams usually augment
Frontend capacity
React and Next.js engineers to clear a UI backlog or rebuild a dated frontend.
Read moreBackend and APIs
Node.js, Python or Laravel developers for APIs, integrations and background jobs.
Read moreAI and data
Engineers who can ship LLM features, retrieval pipelines and evaluation, not just prototypes.
Read moreMobile
Flutter or React Native developers to ship the app your roadmap has been promising.
Read moreCloud and DevOps
AWS, Docker and CI/CD work that keeps getting pushed down the list.
QA and test automation
Testers who write automated suites, so releases stop depending on manual checks.
Augmentation or outsourcing?
Staff augmentation versus outsourcing
| Staff augmentation | Project outsourcing | |
|---|---|---|
| Who leads the work | Your tech lead or product owner | The provider's project manager |
| What you pay for | Engineer time, monthly or hourly | An agreed outcome or milestones |
| Process | Yours: your sprints, tools and standards | The provider's, adapted to you |
| Best for | Teams with leadership but not enough hands | Companies without an engineering team |
| Risk sits with | You, for delivery; provider, for people | Provider, for delivery against scope |
| Flexibility | Add or remove engineers with notice | Changes go through change requests |
Pods
From one specialist to a full pod
A pod is a small cross-functional unit that slots into your team as a group.
Some gaps are a single person. Others are a whole missing function. For the second kind we put together small pods, for example:
- Feature pod: two full-stack developers and a QA engineer, working against your backlog.
- Mobile pod: a Flutter or React Native developer, a backend developer for the API, and design support.
- AI pod: an AI engineer and a backend developer to take an LLM feature from prototype to production.
Pod members are interviewed individually, just as single developers are. You can keep the pod together or reshape it as the work changes.
Jellyfish Technologies puts staff augmentation from India at roughly $2,200 to $6,500 per developer per month across seniority levels in 2026. That is a market range rather than our price; see the cost guide.
What is the difference between staff augmentation and a dedicated team?
They overlap. Staff augmentation describes the purpose, filling gaps in your existing team. A dedicated developer or team describes the arrangement, people working full-time on your product. Most augmentation is delivered through dedicated or contract developers.
Do augmented engineers follow our processes?
Yes. They use your tools, follow your coding standards, attend your ceremonies and report to your leads. That is the main difference from outsourcing.
How many engineers can we add?
Anything from a single specialist to a small pod. We would rather place two engineers who fit than five who do not, so we will tell you honestly what we can staff well and how quickly.
Can augmented engineers work on-site in India?
Our model is remote-first. On-site days for kick-offs, workshops or critical phases can be discussed for clients in India and agreed in the contract.
How do you handle security and access?
Engineers work under an NDA and within the access you grant: your accounts, your VPN, your device policies where required. We keep access to the minimum the work needs and remove it at the end of the engagement.
