How to hire remote developers in India: a practical 2026 guide

India has one of the largest developer talent pools in the world. Hiring well from it is less about finding candidates and more about choosing the right model, testing the right things and setting the engagement up properly.

Short answer

To hire remote developers in India, define the role and seniority precisely, choose an engagement model (dedicated, contract or project), source through an established provider or direct hiring, run a technical interview that tests real work, agree overlap hours, and sign a contract that covers IP, confidentiality, notice and data protection before access is granted.

Why companies hire developers in India

Three reasons come up again and again: the size of the talent pool, cost, and time zone coverage.

Talent. India produces a very large number of engineering graduates every year and has deep experience across web, mobile, cloud, data and, increasingly, AI. Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Pune are the biggest hubs, but remote work means strong developers are now spread across Tier-2 cities too.

Cost. MQBit Technologies puts a mid-level full-stack developer in India at around $2,500 to $4,500 a month, against $8,000 to $15,000 or more for the same role in the US. Senior engineers cost more, but the gap stays large.

Time zones. India Standard Time is UTC+5:30. That is four and a half hours ahead of the UK in summer and five and a half in winter, so an Indian working day overlaps most of a UK working morning. For US companies, India can extend the working day, with handovers at the start and end.

Step 1: Define the role precisely

Most bad hires start with a vague brief. "A React developer" could mean someone who builds marketing pages or someone who architects a design system for a SaaS product. Write down:

  • The actual work for the first three months, not a generic list of technologies.
  • Seniority, defined by what the person should be able to do without help.
  • Must-have versus nice-to-have skills. Be strict with the first list and generous with the second.
  • Overlap hours you genuinely need, and which meetings the developer must attend.
  • Who they report to, and who reviews their code.
Tip

If you cannot describe what the developer will do in their first two weeks, you are not ready to hire yet. Fix that first.

Step 2: Choose the engagement model

There are three common models. Each suits a different situation.

ModelWhat it isBest for
Dedicated developerFull-time developer on your product, rolling monthlyLong roadmaps, building in-house capacity
Contract developerNamed developer for a fixed term, often 3 to 12 monthsDelivery peaks, specialist gaps, trial before hire
Project buildProvider delivers a defined scope for an agreed priceCompanies without an engineering team, defined outcomes

A fourth option, hiring directly as an employer in India, gives you the most control but requires either a local entity or an employer of record, and full-time IT hiring in India now averages 78 days according to CompanyBench. Most companies start with one of the first three. We compare them in detail on our engagement models page.

Step 3: Decide where to source

Your options, roughly from most to least hands-off:

  • An established development company or staffing provider. They screen, employ and replace developers, and are accountable for continuity. You pay a margin for that.
  • Talent marketplaces. Faster access to pre-screened profiles, with varying depth of vetting and less accountability once the engagement starts.
  • Freelance platforms. Cheapest and most flexible, best for short, well-defined tasks. Continuity is the main risk.
  • Direct hiring. Most control, slowest, and you take on employment obligations.

Whichever route you choose, ask the same question: if this developer leaves in month three, what happens?

Step 4: Vet for real work, not trivia

Algorithm puzzles tell you who practised algorithm puzzles. For product work, test what the developer will actually do:

  1. A short, paid or time-boxed exercise close to your real work, or a review of code they have written before.
  2. A live session where they walk through their decisions and extend the exercise. You learn more from how they respond to a change than from the code itself.
  3. A systems conversation for senior roles: how they would design, scale and debug something like your product.
  4. A communication check. Can they explain a trade-off clearly in writing? Remote work runs on written communication.

On our hire pages we list the specific things we test for in each stack, from React rendering behaviour to retrieval quality in AI systems.

Step 5: Budget realistically

Third-party benchmarks for 2026 from Jellyfish Technologies give a useful range for developers working from India:

RoleSenior hourlyDedicated senior monthly
Frontend (React, Next.js)$42–65$6,700–10,400
Backend (Node.js, Python)$45–70$7,200–11,200
Full-stack$48–75$7,600–12,000
Mobile (Flutter, React Native)$45–70$7,200–11,200
AI / ML engineer$60–95$9,600–15,200

Mid-level developers cost substantially less. Very low quotes usually mean junior developers, shared developers, or a provider who will make the difference back somewhere else. Our developer cost guide covers every role and what drives the range.

Step 6: Get the contract right

Before anyone gets access to your code or data, the contract should cover:

  • Intellectual property. Work produced for you should belong to you, with assignment written in explicitly.
  • Confidentiality. A non-disclosure agreement covering your code, data and business information.
  • Data protection. If personal data is involved: India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023, and for UK and EU companies, GDPR and the transfer mechanism you rely on.
  • Term, notice and replacement. What happens if either side wants to end it, or the developer leaves.
  • Working hours and overlap. Written down, so there is no argument later.
  • Payment terms and currency. Monthly invoicing in INR, USD or GBP is common.

Step 7: Onboard like it matters

The first two weeks decide whether a remote developer becomes productive or stays peripheral. A simple plan works:

  • Day one: accounts, repository access, a working local setup and an introduction to the people they will work with.
  • Week one: a small, real ticket that touches the main parts of the codebase, reviewed carefully.
  • Week two: a slightly larger piece of work and their first full sprint.
  • Month one: a short review on both sides. What is working, what is not.

Treat remote developers as team members, not suppliers. Include them in the same channels, demos and decisions as everyone else.

Red flags to watch for

  • The person you interview is not the person who turns up.
  • Rates far below the market range with no clear explanation.
  • No written contract, or one silent on IP and confidentiality.
  • Reluctance to work in your repositories or tools.
  • Status reports instead of working software.
  • Developers shared across several clients without telling you.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to hire a remote developer in India?

Third-party 2026 benchmarks put mid-level developers in India from around $2,500 a month and dedicated senior developers at roughly $6,700 to $12,000 a month depending on stack, with AI and ML engineers higher. Rates vary with seniority, stack, city and engagement model.

Is it legal for a foreign company to hire developers in India?

Yes. Foreign companies commonly engage Indian developers through a development company or staffing provider, through an employer of record, or through their own Indian entity. Hiring individuals directly as employees without an entity or employer of record raises employment and tax questions, so take local advice.

What time zone do Indian developers work in?

India Standard Time, UTC+5:30, with no daylight saving. That is four and a half hours ahead of the UK in summer and five and a half in winter. Most remote developers agree a fixed overlap window with their client's team.

How long does it take to hire a developer in India?

Through direct full-time hiring, CompanyBench reports an average of 78 days for IT roles in 2026. Through a provider with an existing network, contract and dedicated developers can usually start much sooner, depending on the stack.
