Offshore software development in India: a guide for UK companies

UK companies have used Indian engineering teams for decades. The ones that get it right treat it as building a team in a different time zone, not buying a cheaper service. Here is what to plan for.

Short answer

For UK companies, offshore development in India offers a large talent pool, substantially lower cost than UK hiring, and a working day that overlaps most of the UK morning and early afternoon. The keys to success are a clear engagement model, agreed overlap hours, a contract covering IP and confidentiality, and a lawful mechanism for any transfer of personal data under UK GDPR.

Time zones work in your favour

India Standard Time is UTC+5:30 and does not change for daylight saving. The UK moves between GMT and BST, so the gap changes through the year:

UK periodIndia ahead by9:30am to 6:30pm IST equals
British Summer Time (late March to late October)4 hours 30 minutes5:00am to 2:00pm UK
Greenwich Mean Time (late October to late March)5 hours 30 minutes4:00am to 1:00pm UK

Many offshore developers shift their day later, for example 11:00am to 8:00pm IST, which covers the UK from roughly 6:30am to 3:30pm in summer. In practice that gives a UK team most of its working day with the developer online, and a quiet late afternoon for focused work.

How the cost compares

Dotsquares estimates annual costs for developers in India at around $8,000 to $18,000 for frontend specialists, $10,000 to $20,000 for backend and $12,000 to $22,000 for full-stack web developers, against roughly $50,000 to $85,000 for UK or Australian equivalents. Those are salary-level figures; a provider's monthly rate includes employment costs and margin on top.

For dedicated senior developers through a provider, Jellyfish Technologies puts the range at about $6,700 to $12,000 a month depending on stack. Even at the senior end, many UK companies find the total cost well below a UK contractor on a day rate, without the recruitment fees and notice periods of a permanent UK hire.

UK GDPR and data transfers

If developers in India will access personal data about UK individuals, that counts as a restricted transfer under UK GDPR. India does not currently have a UK adequacy decision, so you need an appropriate safeguard, most commonly:

  • The UK International Data Transfer Agreement (IDTA), or
  • The UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses,

together with a transfer risk assessment. The simplest risk reduction is architectural: give developers access to anonymised or synthetic data in development and staging, and restrict production access to the people and tasks that genuinely need it.

India's own Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 also applies to processing in India. A good provider will design for both. This is a summary, not legal advice.

What your contract should cover

  • IP assignment to your UK company for all work produced.
  • Confidentiality, signed before any code or data is shared.
  • Data protection terms, including the transfer mechanism and security measures.
  • Named developers and what happens if one leaves.
  • Working hours and overlap in UK time.
  • Currency and invoicing: GBP invoicing avoids exchange-rate surprises on your side.
  • Governing law and disputes, agreed explicitly.

Making the team work day to day

  • Treat offshore developers as team members. Same Slack channels, same standups, same demos.
  • Write things down. Clear tickets, decision logs and recorded demos remove most time-zone friction.
  • Protect the overlap. Put standups and reviews in the shared hours, and leave the rest for focused work.
  • Visit, or meet properly online, early on. A kick-off where people meet each other pays for itself.
  • Review monthly. Raise issues early rather than letting them build up.

Frequently asked questions

What time difference is there between the UK and India?

India is four and a half hours ahead of the UK during British Summer Time and five and a half hours ahead during Greenwich Mean Time. India does not use daylight saving.

Can UK companies legally share personal data with developers in India?

Yes, with an appropriate safeguard under UK GDPR, because India does not have a UK adequacy decision. The usual mechanisms are the UK International Data Transfer Agreement or the UK Addendum to the EU Standard Contractual Clauses, together with a transfer risk assessment. Take advice for your situation.

How much cheaper are Indian developers than UK developers?

Dotsquares estimates annual costs for Indian web developers at roughly $8,000 to $22,000 depending on specialism, against $50,000 to $85,000 for UK or Australian equivalents. Provider rates are higher than salary figures but typically remain well below UK costs.
